Leading figures from the UK nuclear industry joined local MPs at Carlisle Racecourse on Friday, June 30 for the Northern Nuclear Conference.
The conference, which was also attended by the UK’s nuclear minister, Andrew Bowie, was hosted by Carlisle MP, John Stevenson and began with a recorded message from the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak.
Officials from Sellafield, Tetra Tech, Rolls Royce delivered presentations and took part in panel discussions about the future role nuclear power is to have in Cumbria and across the UK in the years to come.
In the video, PM Rishi Sunak said: “I understand just how important the nuclear industry is for the northern economy, particularly for jobs in Cumbria.
“But reviving nuclear isn’t just about growing our economy, it is also about reducing people’s energy bills and powering Britain, from Britain.”

Tetra Tech - Senior Project Manager
Aimee MacFadyen is a Senior Project Manager within Tetra Tech working in the Nuclear Delivery Team. She started her career in the Nuclear Industry at the age of 16 as a Mechanical Design Apprentice. During this time, she was embedded into multi-disciplinary design projects which developed her interest in project governance and later led her into her current career as a project manager.
Aimee now works as part of an integrated design team to deliver several decommissioning and new build projects within the nuclear industry. She is passionate about encouraging businesses to inspire the next generation and supporting apprentices and graduates to embark on their careers. She collaborates with Women in Nuclear as a member of the strategic development team for the Leadership and Development Framework to deliver initiatives that help to guide and empower members to pursue a leadership role.
Rolls Royce - Director Strategy and Business Development
Alan has spent 22 years at Rolls-Royce, across several senior roles and sectors including Marine, Defence, Power Systems and Corporate Strategy. Alan is responsible for growth of the Rolls-Royce SMR business covering market and customer development, creation of programme partnerships, and funding of both the Rolls-Royce SMR company as well as the strategy for creating future deployment funding options.
Minister for Nuclear and Networks
Elected as Member of Parliament for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine in 2017, Andrew now serves as the UK’s first ever Minister for Nuclear and Networks in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
In 2019, Andrew was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the then Prime Minister, Theresa May. Since then, he has worked as the Conservative Party Vice Chairman (2019-2021) and was promoted to Minister for Exports at the Department for International Trade in Oct 2022.
When not in Westminster, Andrew enjoys running, playing the violin, supporting Aberdeen FC, and walking his dalmatian, Winston, in the beautiful Aberdeenshire countryside with his family.
Tetra Tech - President
Craig Hatch is President of Tetra Tech in the UK, having overseen the growth of this leading provider of consulting and engineering services from 1800 people in 2019 to the current level of 5700. Based in Cockermouth, Craig is a well-known figure in the region and has previously collected the accolade of Businessperson of the Year at the CN awards. His experience of building and leading multi-disciplinary teams within multiple sectors, not only nuclear, means he is ideally placed to offer insight into the skills gap challenge and what we can do to inspire the next generation of people entering the nuclear industry.
Craig also holds the position of Chair of the Cumbria LEP Clean Energy Panel and is Chair of the Board of Trustees at the National Sick Children's Charity, Well Child.
BEC Business Cluster - CEO
Following a varied career including nuclear, education, local government and a period as an entrepreneur Dianne is now CEO of Britain's Energy Coast Business Cluster delivering membership value to over 250 businesses with a connection to the clean energy sector. Once described as a "Social Butterfly who creates a hurricane" Dianne is passionate about connecting organisations and people. She loves her role and making new connections in person or via Social Media. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and has a Masters in Corporate Social Responsibility as well as a Degree in Business Management.
Morgan Sindall Infrastructure - Managing Director, Nuclear
Eldon joined Morgan Sindall Infrastructure in 2018, having previously held senior positions in major engineering, telecoms, utilities, and construction businesses. He was instrumental in Morgan Sindall Infrastructure’s nuclear business unit securing the £1.8 billion, 20-year Programme and Project Partners contract with Sellafield Ltd. Eldon is a great advocate of collaborative working models, ensuring that projects are built well and leave lasting legacies in the regions they are built. Currently, he sits on the ICG steering group for Project 13. Eldon began his engineering career on a graduate scheme and has since led teams to design and deliver high-profile infrastructure projects around the world. With overall operational responsibility for the nuclear business unit, Eldon is driven by his commitment to challenging the status quo. He is a keen advocate of development programs within the business and actively supports apprentices, graduates, and armed forces redeployments in carving out long-term roles within the company.
Sellafield - Head of Corporate Sustainability and Supply Chain Development
Eirini Etoimou is Head of Corporate Sustainability and Supply Chain Development and Solutions at Sellafield Ltd. Eirini is also chair of the Manchester branch of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply. She is an executive with more than 15 years’ experience in global, senior management positions. Eirini holds a MSc in Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, MBA in Leadership and Sustainability and speaks four languages. She participates as a guest speaker at universities and at UK and international conferences as a passionate advocate of human rights and specialises in leadership and sustainability. Additionally, Eirini contributes with content about leadership, business strategy, sustainability, procurement strategy and other business topics in academic journals and via social media and online business magazines. Eirini also acts as a volunteer consultant for institutions, supporting them to set their strategic plans.
Bechtel - Director Business Development, Nuclear Power
Ivan Baldwin is Bechtel’s UK and European Business Development Director for Nuclear Power, with a portfolio covering GW scale, SMR, AMR, and Fusion. Bechtel has led the delivery of 75,000 megawatts of nuclear power, spanning 7 decades.
Ivan is also the President of Women in Nuclear UK, the first man to hold this position in recognition of the much bigger commitment required from men, to meet the sector target of 40% women by 2030.
Prior to joining Bechtel, Ivan served as Vice President, Government & International at the National Nuclear Laboratory and held project and business development roles with BAE Systems, Nuvia Limited, and Carr’s Engineering.
Ivan is the representative for UK Nuclear Regions on the UK’s Nuclear Industry Council, where the focus is unlocking the economic potential in nuclear regions and driving social value for the people in those communities.
For 7 years up until 2022, Ivan served as the Chairman of Britain’s Energy Coast Business Cluster, a private sector led group of over 300 companies located in the Northwest of England, in the region that is home to Sellafield, BAE Systems Submarines, and the UK’s Low Level Waste Repository.
NDA - Director of Socio Economics
Jamie Reed is the first Director of Socio Economics at the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and a serving NED at Social Value UK, the professional body for social value and impact management. Jamie served as the Member of Parliament for Copeland between 2005-20017, serving on the Labour front bench as shadow Environment Minister, shadow Health Minister and as a UK representative on the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. Jamie’s political priorities centred upon energy policy, particularly the establishment of new nuclear policy. In 2010, Jamie was named MP of the Year by the Child Poverty Action Group. Prior to joining the NDA, Jamie worked as the Head of Corporate Affairs for Sellafield Ltd.
Westlakes Research Limited - Trustee
International energy and economic development specialist, Professor John Fyfe has spent a lifetime working in the energy sectors and strategic economic development issues across the world. He has been committed to the people and challenges of Cumbria for over 30 years. Prof Fyfe has always been an advocate of more comprehensive energy policies that properly take account of the “human” or socio-economic aspects of the local community, and regional levels. He pioneered the concept of corporate social responsibility in the private sector. Prof Fyfe has experience in the public and private sectors and strongly believes in the partnership concept in its various forms. He has been a full-time trade union official and director of British Coal Enterprises, the UK Government Employment Adviser, advising Commonwealth countries on economic development and in training or mentoring leaders. He has also advised the UK government on energy policy issues and the restructuring of the nuclear industry. His academic achievements have covered senior appointments at Manchester, Oxford, Amsterdam and Harvard universities through his career. Britain’s Energy Coast Business Cluster appointed Prof Fyfe as its patron.
He is a Trustee of Westlakes Research Ltd.
Member of Parliament for Carlisle
John was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and Dundee University.
After graduating from Dundee, John went to Chester College of Law where he studied English Law and subsequently qualified as a solicitor in 1990. He went on to become a partner in Bendles Solictors, Carlisle.
In 2010 John was elected Conservative MP for Carlisle with a majority of 853. He was the first Conservative to be elected as MP for Carlisle since 1959. He was re-elected in 2015, 2017, and as of the December 2019 election John’s majority now stands at 8319.
John organises and hosts an annual Carlisle Skills Fair. The event is a huge success attracting over 2500 jobseekers and young people and 80 businesses, organisations and training providers from the Carlisle constituency.
He has a keen interest in business, education and local government reform and was a member of the Communities and Local Government Select Committee during the last Parliament.
John is also a keen sportsman and prior to his election he made a pledge that should he be elected he would cycle from his constituency to London. He completed the cycle in October 2010 raising £13,500 for the Eden Valley Hospice. He also cycled from Lands End to John O’ Groats raising further funds for the charity.
Aside from his duties as a constituency MP, he is the chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Food and Drink, which discusses the direction of national policy on British food and drink manufacture. He is Chair of the West Coast Mainline APPG, Chair of the APPG on Family Businesses and a member of the APPG on the Nuclear Industry, the Public Affairs and Constitutional Affairs Committee and the 1922 Committee.
In 2022 John was elected Chair of the Northern Research Group (NRG) – a group founded by a number of Conservative MPs in the United Kingdom who were elected to represent constituencies in northern England, Wales and the Scottish borders in the 2019 general election to pressure government for greater investment in the north.
Member of Parliament for Workington
Mark Jenkinson was born in Whitehaven and raised in Workington, attending St Joseph’s Catholic School and agricultural college in Cumbria at Newton Rigg.
Mark went on to do an electrical apprenticeship at British Steel and has worked in several industries including the nuclear sector, throughout his career.
Previously, he worked as a self-employed contractor in the nuclear supply chain and served as Deputy Leader of the former borough council. In 2019, Mark was elected Conservative MP for the Workington constituency with a majority of 4176. He was the first Conservative to be elected as MP for Workington since a by- election in 1976.
Mark is a member of the BEIS Select Committee and has a keen interest in other policy areas including skills, local government reform and heritage, as well as campaigning for rewilding, and infrastructure investment.
He has been a vocal supporter of business and industry, including the coking coal mine vital for Whitehaven.
In February 2022, he was made parliamentary private secretary for DEFRA and also served as an Assistant Government Whip.
In December 2022, he joined the Women and Equalities Committee.
EDF - Station Director Heysham 1
Martin started his career in the energy industry more than 30 years ago as a Technician Engineer at Ferrybridge power station.
Since then he has worked in a number of roles including leadership positions in both thermal and nuclear for E.ON, Uniper and EDF. As a highly motivated, people focussed senior leader, he was Plant Manager at West Burton A power station and Head of Thermal Generation for EDF before moving to be the Station Director at Heysham 1 nuclear power station in Lancashire in 2020.
Martin has an MBA in Energy and Sustainability from the University of Cumbria; is a Fellow of the Institute of Plant Engineers and of the Society of Operations Engineers and a Member of the Institute of Engineering Technology.
Martin is from Yorkshire and is married with two children. In his spare time, Martin enjoys walking, watching rugby league and football and playing snooker.
Solway Community Power Company - Chair
Paul Foster is a highly experienced nuclear and industrial leader.
He spent 20 years at the Sellafield nuclear site, in a number of executive and senior operational roles including Chief Operating Officer and five years as Chief Executive Officer. As CEO he was responsible for a multi-billion pound budget and a staff/supply chain team of c.14,000 people.
Under his stewardship, Sellafield Ltd made unprecedented progress in what is one of the world’s largest and most complex environmental clean-ups. For example, he oversaw the creation of a 20-year supply chain partnership, significant improvements in safety and security, and the delivery of more than a billion pounds of efficiencies. He also steered a new approach to Sellafield’s corporate citizenship, investing more than £40 million in community benefit projects during his five years as CEO.
Paul served on the Paris regional Governing Board of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) for seven years.
More recently he was Managing Director of Devonport Royal Dockyard Ltd (part of Babcock International), the UK’s sole licensed site for the refit and refuel/defuel of nuclear-powered submarines.
He’s an experienced ‘intelligent client’ for mega projects, with an extensive track record in ‘first of a kind’ programmes and a healthy reputation as a ‘positive disruptor’.
In the 2020 New Year’s Honours List, Paul was awarded a CBE for services to business.
Now Co-founder and Chair of Solway Community Power Company, Paul is leading the charge on developing small modular reactor (SMR) capability, focusing not only on its role in achieving Net Zero and energy security but also in enabling economic growth in the north.
National Nuclear Laboratory - CEO
Dr Paul Howarth is Chief Executive Officer at National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), holding the position for over 12 years. He has run large groups and extensive portfolios in both academic and business environments and engaged with senior stakeholders across government, academia and industry.
Paul began his career working on the European Fusion Programme where he completed his PhD, he subsequently worked in Japan on technology transfer in the semiconductor industry and the Japanese nuclear programme. He was at BNFL at numerous locations in the UK within roles covering technology commercialisation, plant support and policy development, culminating in support to the UK government on the case for new nuclear build.
Paul co-founded the Dalton Nuclear Institute and worked for the US organisation Battelle alongside US National Laboratories on M&O contract development. In 2009, he was part of the team that was awarded the contract to run NNL. Currently, Paul is Chair of the Association of Innovation, Research and Technology Organisations (AIRTO). He was elected to the Royal Academy of Engineers in 2014.
Nuclear Industry Association - Chairman
Tim is the Chairman of the Nuclear Industry Association and also the Chairman of Nuclear Risk Insurers. During its first phase of work, he was heavily involved in the creation of, and chaired the Industry Advisory Group of Great British Nuclear, the body established from a roundtable with the Prime Minister on 21st March 2022 to accelerate the delivery of new nuclear power in the UK. He became a Trustee of Arup Group in April 2023 and from 2015 — 2023 he was one of the two non-executive members of the Arup Group Board where he chaired the Audit Committee and was a member of several other committees. From 2014 — 2021 he was a non-executive director of Horizon Nuclear Power and was, until March 2019, a member of the Wylfa Newydd site licence company board and chaired the Risk and Audit Committee for the Horizon Board. From 2003 to June 2018 he was the longest serving member of the Board of the European Investment Bank & from 2011 — 2015 he was a non-executive director of the Anglian Water Group. He is a member of a number of advisory boards for infrastructure investors, funds and advisory firms. In 2015 — 2016 he advised DGENER on aspects of the ITER Project, work commissioned by the then Deputy Director General and has since then worked with a number of other fusion projects around the world including as advisor to a Sovereign Wealth Fund on potential investments in fusion projects. He was the one foreign member of the Expert Advisory Committee of the Royal Commission on the Nuclear Fuel Cycle established in 2015 by the government of South Australia, having been an advisor to the South Australian Government on a variety of infrastructure projects since 2001, including advising the Treasurer on the New Royal Adelaide Hospital, which is the largest hospital in the Southern ITemisphere. Ie was also the original financial advisor in Abu Dhabi to ENEC for their successful nuclear program. In his earlier career, he was one of the founders of London & Continental Railways which is now known as I181, having previously advised and arranged the financing of British Eurostar and SNCF’s TGV trains.
Until 2013, Tim was the Expert Chair of the Office for Nuclear Development in DECC and the Senior Advisor to successive Secretaries of State responsible for energy. He served five different Secretaries of State in two different governments over nearly 7 years. During this period he conducted a formal review of the nuclear safety regulator, then the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate, and his recommendations were entirely accepted by the Government and resulted in the creation of the Office of Nuclear Regulation. He also worked on carbon capture and storage, tidal and wind power both in terms of policy and financing and continues to support all forms of low-carbon energy which are safe and efficient in terms of system cost to the national economy.
His previous career was as the Chairman and founder of KPMG’s Global Infrastructure and Projects Group. During this time he was a member of DEFRA’s Sustainable Procurement Taskforce and a member of London First's Infrastructure Commission and he led the Rail Review in 2004 for the Department of Transport and H.M. Treasury.
Prior to joining KPMG, he was a Managing Director of S.G. Warburg in New York and London and a Managing Director of Chase Manhattan Bank in New York. His career began, after some teaching experience at Oxford, with Arthur Andersen & Co.'s management consultancy division where he designed and installed large, complex computer systems in government, insurance, retail and the financing industry. On one engagement in the early 1980s, he used Al techniques to create computer code automatically.
He was a trustee of the London Symphony Chorus Endowment Fund from 2007-2020, a member of the Technology Steering Board and the Digital Products Board in the Royal Opera House from 2008 — 2020. He is a Visiting Professor in the Engineering Department of Bristol University specialising in energy policy, including the applications of nuclear energy and is an Honorary Professor in Infrastructure Investment & Finance at University College London where he earlier jointly developed the MSc course as a Visiting Professor. From 2011 — 2017 was also a Visiting Professor in Energy Policy at UCLs International Energy Policy Institute in Adelaide, Australia. From 2001 — 2010 he was a Member of Council of the Institute for Education where he also chaired the Estates Committee.
He was appointed a Commander of the British Empire in the 2010 Birthday Honours List for services to the energy industry and holds an undergraduate degree and a doctorate from St. Catherines College, Oxford. He is a Fellow of the Insti- tution of Civil Engineers, an Honorary Fellow of the Nuclear Institute, a Member of the British Computer Society and a Chartered Engineer. He was awarded the Hinton Prize by the Nuclear Institute in 2018 for outstanding contribution to the nuclear industry.
Member of Parliament for Copeland
A proud, born and raised West Cumbrian is how Trudy would like to be described.
Granddaughter of a miner and also a farmer with an ancestry deeply rooted in the local area, Trudy was brought up in Seascale for the first nine years, then Wasdale, and after a six-year period in Whitehaven she and her family; husband Keith and four daughters, Gabrielle, Savannah, Francesca and Rosemary moved to Bootle in 2002, where they live today.
Upon leaving Wyndham Comprehensive, Trudy started her career at Sellafield working across the site in a variety of roles - in Thorp Management Centre, MOX and B591. She also worked in Separation and Waste Retrieval and Decommissioning. The birth of her first daughter, Gabrielle, in 1998 prompted a career move to nursery owner and manager which led to voluntary roles at her children’s school, Captain Shaw’s in Bootle, in fundraising and on the governing body.
The decline of village life in Bootle motivated Trudy’s interest in local politics. She joined Bootle Parish Council in 2006 and later secured the position of regeneration officer at Copeland Borough Council in 2010. A self-confessed late starter, Trudy combined full-time work, her role in the community and being a mum of four with a part-time Foundation Degree at the University of Salford, studying Sustainable Communities.
Trudy worked most recently on the Bootle2020 Programme in her home village; a programme of activities aiming to breathe new life into Bootle for future generations supported by private investors.
In February 2017, Trudy became Copeland’s first female and also first Conservative MP with her campaign pledges supporting nuclear, road, rail and digital investment along with a strong focus on health and education. She was subsequently re-elected in General Elections in 2017 and 2019.
Her Parliamentary roles have included Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister (December 2019 to September 2021); Member of the Education Select Committee (September 2017 to November 2019); Apprentice Ambassador for the Department for Education (October 2017 to July 2019) and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Department for Education, Department for Transport, and the Ministry of Defence.
In September 2021, Trudy was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Transport, and in July 2022, she was promoted in the department to Minister of State.
In September 2022, Trudy was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
